Day 25 of the Ultimate Blog Challenge

From J.R.’s Dallas to Ohio: My Direct Sales Convention Memories
By:  Carolyn Wright
Whether traveling for business or pleasure, everyone has their non-negotiable items that must go into the suitcase. Some people can't leave home without a Bluetooth speaker to play music in their hotel room, but for me, the necessities were always a reliable camera, a sharp pen, and a blank notebook.
Looking back at my years as an independent displayer for Home Interiors & Gifts Inc., Celebrating Home, and Signature HomeStyles, those three items were my ultimate lifelines. We traveled all over the country depending on which company was hosting, and having my tools ready was the only way to capture the excitement of the journey.
Deep in the Heart of Dallas
Because these companies were based in different regions, our meetings took us to different places. I will never forget traveling to Dallas, Texas for a massive Home Interiors meeting. It was during the era when the hit TV show Dallas was taking the world by storm. Being right there in the city while everyone was talking about J.R. Ewing gave the entire trip an extra layer of unforgettable pop-culture excitement!
Other trips took me to different corners of the map, like traveling to Ohio or nearby states for regional Signature HomeStyles assemblies to see the latest Midwestern design trends.
The High-Energy Display Floor
No matter where the meetings were held, the convention halls were always packed with thousands of excited independent displayers. You could feel the buzz in the air the second you walked through the doors.
The highlight each year was the grand unveiling of the new product lines. The display floors looked incredible, and you would see cameras flashing everywhere. We all scrambled to take pictures of the new home decor, candles, and gifts so we could show our hostesses and customers exactly what was coming down the pipeline.
Customizing the Learning Experience
These trips were far from passive vacations. The companies filled the schedule with concurrent training sessions, meaning you had to choose which rooms to enter based on what your business needed most.
Because there was so much valuable information being shared, my pen and paper never left my hand. I filled pages with:
  • Creative product display layouts
  • Booking and recruiting ideas
  • Sellers' tips from top earners in the company
A Legacy of Worship and Celebration
The energy peaked during the general sessions where awards and spectacular prizes were showered upon the top sellers and recruiters. But what truly stood out to me—and what I think everyone remembers most—was how the meetings brought things to a close.
I remember the wonderful spirit of founders Steve and Penny Carlile. While I don't recall exactly where they met, I will always remember the incredible tradition of the worship service they and the companies hosted at the end of the events. It was consistently excellent and deeply moving. It gave us a quiet, unified space to reflect, practice gratitude, and ground ourselves before heading back to our busy daily routines.
I don't think a single person ever attended those conferences without attaining something wonderful—whether it was a physical door prize, a notebook full of strategies, or a heart full of fresh inspiration.
